The image represents siege of the city of Calais. The Burghers of the city surrendered themselves to a vindictive English king in exchange for the lives of their fellow citizens. The King ordered them to their deaths but his wife the queen, heavy with child, begged them be spared. The roses in the tankard represent the Burghers, the flowers beyond the window panes their fellow citizens.
